What is Yoga?
When we think of yoga, intricate poses and flexibility may come to mind. And while these components certainly reflect the “marketing glamor” of yoga, they don’t scratch the surface on the heart, depth, or history of what yoga really is. So this begs the question, what is Yoga?
Yoga is predominantly the Science of Self-awareness and Self-discovery. Yoga is an ancient system of physical, mental, and spiritual practices that have been passed down through generations from teacher to student.
The pathway to self-awareness and self-discovery can be obtained through a combination of breathing exercises, postures, meditation, guided relaxation, chanting mantras in Sanskrit, and so much more. By understanding ourselves better, we can navigate life with greater clarity, empathy, and resilience. Breathing exercises help us become aware of our breath and how it feels. This could help draw our focus to the present moment instead of the past or future.
Yogic postures not only help with flexibility, they also strengthen our mind-body connection. Strengthening our mind-body connection can benefit numerous areas in our life, including reducing stress and regulating our emotions. Listening to mantra in Sanskrit carries positive vibrational quality. Sometimes when we think of Yoga we think just stretching. But Yoga is so much more.
During our Yoga classes at Essence we incorporate multiple techniques that can help lead to the pathway of self-awareness & self-discovery. If you're interested in this path, consistency is key. The benefits of Yoga have the ability to go way beyond a Downward Dog. A consistent practice of mindfulness with physical movement can cultivate a balanced and healthy life.
It's helpful to have a basic understanding of what Yoga is. That way you can reap all of the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of this ancient practice.
